 Chiropractic deals
with the re-alignment of the structural framework of the human body -
mainly the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems. Founded in 1895 by
Daniel David Palmer, chiropractic recognizes that all functions within
the body are controlled by the nervous system. When a nerve is impinged,
an imbalance of nerve impulses to the destined body part occurs. If it
is a nerve that innervates (supplies) a muscle, spasms and pain can
result. If it is a nerve that innervates an organ, such as the liver,
the ability of the organ to do its job is diminished. If the nerve is
innervating a portion of the skin controlling our ability to sense
touch, tingling or paresthesia could occur.
All of the nerves below the head pass through the spinal
column first. If one or more of the spinal vertebrae - the bones that
make up your "backbone" - are not functioning properly, this could cause
compression of the nerves running through that particular vertebra.
Compression, ever so slight, can interrupt the flow of nerve impulses to
its destination resulting in altered function. A chiropractor will
correct these imbalances by freeing up the vertebrae so that proper
function will return. |
